Anybody have experience with a Grand L 5030. It's expensive but I'm thinking of buying one with loader and scraper to do earthwork (roads, grading, clearing, etc.) on very steep topography. I figure I'd need the extra HP or is it overkill and too hard to maneuver?
I'm getting inconsistent answers as to whether the front end has a differential lock in 4WD, or posi, limited slip or anything other than an open differential. Anybody know?
And why don't these babies have front brakes?

I don't have one of those critters, but I can tell you it is a BIG machine.
You need to outline the tasks you hope to accomplish and then find the smallest machine that will do the job and drive both side by side. You will find what is most comfortable in very short order, probably something between a B7500 and the 5030. Perhaps a 2910? I think the 10 foot turning radius on the 5030 may impress you as being better suited for open field work.
I have not seen a CUT under 50 HP with anything but an open differential on the front, so it would certainly be a big deal in the sales literature if it was different.
A well designed modern tractor has a wet brakes, a set of disk brakes bathed in oil, that stop the rear wheels in two wheel drive and all four in four wheel drive. When you consider the ground speeds involved it becomes evident that there is plenty of braking power here.
If you had separate front brakes, you would have three brake pedals. Since your rear brakes are split in two and used for tight turns, applying a front brake at the same time would certainly negate that whole process.
BTW, Do note that the 10 foot turning radius for the 5030 applies only in 2wd with one rear brake locked.

How steep is your terrain? Wheeled tractors cannot replace a tracked excavator in rugged conditions. Be safe, most accidents happen when the equipment is not used for the purposes, or under conditions, it was designed for.

Thanks, DRankin...Do you mean it has front brakes that are only actuated when in 4WD or no front brakes and engine braking will do the trick?
And I assume the other tractors you mmentioned have much smaller turning radii?
Unlike others, the 5030 also accepts Cat. 2 implements.
You do any mining? ....

When you tie the system together by engaging the 4wd, the rear brakes will slow/stop the front wheels by means of the transmission and drive shaft.
If you have a 4wd truck.. it would be the same as pulling the handbrake with the 4wd engaged... all four wheels will stop.
Yes, smaller tractors are much more maneuverable.
I live in an historic mining district, but I do not mine. ....

Now I have to pay...which I'm not going to.
Yea, I see mountain lions, maybe once/5 years. Last time screaming like a banshee like she got one of our dogs. This was in the only remaining brush after a wildfire burned 1200 acres of habitat surrounding me. Then she walked across the draw 100 yards away like she owned the place...probably 150 lbs. or so!
